Growing pains, and the limp that is not one
Aching legs in the evening in a well child who runs all day can be ordinary. A limp in the morning is not a proverb.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
So-called growing pains are aches in both legs, usually in the evening or night, in a child who examines normally and runs happily by morning. They come and go. Pain in one joint, swelling, fever, a limp, or pain that is there every morning is a different list: injury, infection, inflammation, or a problem in the hip. Those are examined.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Both shins ache after a long day of play, then ease with a rub.
- The child plays normally the next morning.
- One knee is swollen or hot.
- The child refuses to bear weight.
What usually sits underneath
Muscles complain after unaccustomed running. Joints that are inflamed complain in a more precise way, and the child protects them. Vitamin D deficiency is common and worth thinking about, but it should not be the label stuck on a swollen joint.
Care that is reasonable at home
- A warm compress and ordinary comfort for a child who otherwise runs.
- Shoes that fit. Many ‘leg pains’ are tight footwear.
- Do not give adult pain tablets or steroid drops because a neighbour did.
- If pains are frequent, ask about activity, diet, and whether a vitamin D test is actually warranted.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- A limp, a swollen joint, or fever with bone pain.
- Pain after a fall if the child will not use the limb.
- Night pain that wakes the child every night and is in one spot.
How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in
Paediatric or orthopaedic OPD can examine the hip and knee properly. Bring the child in the morning if the limp is an early-day problem, so we can see it. OPD runs Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM at Near Rockford School, Anaj Mandi Chowk, Kadipur Road, Shakti Park, Sector 10A, Gurugram, Haryana. Call 98185 48492 or 70423 28047. There is no appointment form on this website.
Questions people ask
Do children ache because they are growing?
Growth itself is not painful. The phrase is used for a harmless pattern. Any joint swelling falls outside that phrase.
Is a massage enough?
For bilateral evening aches in a well child, often yes. For a limp, no.
Should they stop sports?
Not if examination is normal and the pain is the harmless pattern. A swollen joint rests until it is seen.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
