If everyone around you has started mumbling, consider the ear. Hearing loss pushes people out of conversations and then out of the house.

In plain language

Wax is a common, treatable cause. Age-related nerve loss is common and slower. One-sided hearing loss, a sudden drop, or hearing loss with dizziness and headache needs a clinician promptly. Shouting at the person does not help. Face them, speak clearly, and reduce the television in the background. A hearing aid that stays in a drawer is a expensive failure. The fitting and the follow-up are the actual treatment.

Signs worth noticing

These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.

The television volume is a family argument.
They answer a different question from the one you asked.
Noise in the ears, or sudden hearing drop in one ear.
Ear pain, discharge, or a sudden loss after a cold or a flight.

What usually sits underneath

The inner ear loses high-frequency hearing first, so consonants disappear and speech becomes mush, especially in noise. The brain, starved of sound, is also at higher risk of depression and of looking as if memory has gone.

Care that is reasonable at home

Do not clean ears with pins or buds. You push wax in and you can burst a drum.
Ask for an ear look before you buy a aid. Wax is cheaper.
If an aid is prescribed, wear it during the trial period. Return for adjustment.
Tell family to speak face to face, not from the next room.

These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.

When waiting is a bad idea

Sudden hearing loss in one ear. Treat it as urgent.
Vertigo with weakness, facial droop, or a severe headache.
Discharge and pain in someone with diabetes.

Questions people ask

Are hearing aids useless in old age?

No. Expectations should be honest, and the device should be fitted, not bought from a stall and abandoned.

Is the television damaging it further?

A loud television is a sign, not the usual cause. Headphones at high volume do cause loss.

Can blood pressure be related?

Sudden hearing or balance symptoms with other neurological signs need urgent care. Chronic loss has many causes. Do not assume.
