High blood pressure between clinic visits

A high reading on a shop machine is a reason to sit down and repeat it, not a reason to panic or to start a relative’s tablet.

This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.

In plain language

Blood pressure is the push of blood on artery walls. One reading after tea, traffic, or a climb up the stairs is often higher than your usual pressure. Diagnosis needs a pattern: rested readings, on more than one day, looked at by a clinician who also knows your age, kidneys, and other illnesses.

Signs worth noticing

Write the numbers down. A single dramatic reading matters less than what the arm shows after five quiet minutes.

What usually sits underneath

Salt-heavy pickles, packaged snacks, painkillers used for weeks, kidney disease, and a parent with early heart disease all push pressure up. So does poor sleep and a job that never lets you sit still long enough to be measured properly.

Care that is reasonable at home

  1. Sit with your back supported, feet on the floor, and the cuff on bare skin at heart level.
  2. Rest five minutes. Do not talk. Take two readings a minute apart and keep the lower honest one.
  3. Check a few mornings and evenings for a week if your clinician asked for a home record.
  4. Cut the obvious salt: papad, pickles, namkeen, and extra salt at the table. Do not stop prescribed tablets because a blog said so.

Home machines need the right cuff size. A small cuff on a large arm reads falsely high. If two machines disagree, bring yours to OPD and compare it.

When waiting is a bad idea

How Rao Lokram Charitable Trust fits in

Questions people ask

Is one high reading hypertension?

No. Diagnosis is a pattern, plus an examination. Treat one scary number as a prompt to repeat it calmly.

Should I borrow a neighbour’s tablet?

No. The drug and the dose depend on your other illnesses. A tablet that suits them can be a poor fit for you.

How often should I check?

If you are well and not on treatment, a clinic check every so often is enough. If you are on treatment, follow the schedule you were given.

If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
