Cancer screening conversations that are actually useful
Screening means looking before symptoms. It is worth doing for a few cancers, at the right age. It is not a blood test that promises to find everything.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Cervical screening and, at the right age, breast screening have evidence behind them. Bowel screening is discussed by age. Oral screening matters in people who chew tobacco. A lump, a mouth ulcer that does not heal, bleeding after menopause, a changing mole, or blood in the stool are symptoms, not screening. They need a visit now. Blood ‘tumour markers’ in a healthy person are a common way to buy anxiety.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- You are due a cervical test and have been postponing it.
- You chew tobacco and have not had anyone look in your mouth.
- A breast lump, a non-healing mouth ulcer, or postmenopausal bleeding.
- A relative selling a full-body scan. Ask what will be done with the inevitable incidental finding.
What usually sits underneath
Some cancers shed cells or change the organ early enough that a test helps. Many do not. A useful test finds a cancer early enough to change the outcome, without drowning healthy people in false alarms. Few tests pass that bar.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Ask your clinician which one or two screenings match your age and sex.
- Stop tobacco. It is the screening test you do on yourself.
- Examine breasts with awareness, and report a new lump. Do not pinch monthly until you are frightened of normal tissue.
- If a test is abnormal, repeat or investigate it. Do not repeat the same package in another city for comfort.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Any of the symptom alarms above.
- A positive screening test. It needs a plan, not a second opinion from a neighbour.
- Unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or a lymph node that is growing.

Questions people ask
Is a yearly whole-body PET wise?
No. Not in a healthy person. The radiation and the false leads are real.
Does a normal blood count rule cancer out?
No. It is the wrong reassurance.
What if I am frightened to test?
Book the one test you are due, not ten. Fear grows in the tests you keep postponing.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
