Breathing on a bad air day
A bad air day irritates eyes and throat in almost everyone. People with asthma, heart disease, and young children pay more.
This page is general education for families in Gurugram. It is not a diagnosis, a medicine list, or a reason to skip a clinician. Doses are deliberately not given.
In plain language
Fine particles reach the airway and the blood. They provoke cough, wheeze, and, in people with heart disease, extra strain. The useful actions are dull: stay indoors when it is severe if you have lung or heart disease, close windows on the worst hours, avoid outdoor exercise then, and use a well-fitting mask if you must go out. A decorative cloth mask does little. An N95-type mask, worn over nose and mouth, does more.
Signs worth noticing
These are the clues families usually notice first. One of them, on its own, is not a diagnosis.
- Throat irritation and a shallow cough that settles indoors.
- Wheeze in a person who already has asthma.
- Chest pain or severe breathlessness that is new.
- A child who is breathing fast.
What usually sits underneath
The dose makes the harm. Hours of outdoor exertion in severe pollution are a large dose. Sitting in a sealed room with a purifier is a smaller one. Indoor smoke from incense and cooking is part of the same problem.
Care that is reasonable at home
- Shift walks to indoor corridors on severe days.
- Treat the room you sleep in as the priority. An air purifier helps if the windows are actually shut and the filter is real.
- Keep asthma medicines going. Bad air is not the week to skip them.
- Rinse eyes with clean water if they burn. Do not use steroid drops from a drawer.
These steps are for someone who is otherwise stable. If the picture is changing quickly, skip the home trial and come in.
When waiting is a bad idea
- Chest pain, severe breathlessness, or a reliever inhaler that fails.
- A child or older adult who is unusually drowsy or breathing fast.
- Symptoms that continue for days after the air improves, especially fever and a productive cough.

Questions people ask
Is morning air cleaner?
Not reliably. Check that day’s pattern. Dawn can be among the worst hours in winter.
Do houseplants clean the air?
Not at a meaningful scale. They are pleasant and they do not replace a shut window on a severe day.
Should healthy people panic?
No. Reduce heavy outdoor exertion on severe days and do not take up smoking. Panic is not a lung treatment.
If this sounds like you, bring the article on your phone if you want, but let the clinician examine you. Old reports and a list of current medicines make the visit shorter.
